There is a word I’m rather fond of: sagacious.

It’s not a word you hear every day, which is a pity. It has such a nice mouth feel.

Sagacious means wise, perceptive, possessing sound judgement — the sort of judgement that tends to arrive only after one has bought a few questionable jackets in the past.

And yet, it seems to me that the most interestingly dressed men often possess exactly this quality.

They are not chasing trends.
They are not frantically refreshing fashion blogs.
They are simply making good decisions.

Which brings us to nicely around House of D’s strap line:

Now you might reasonably ask what that means.

After years of observing my husband D — whose wardrobe expansion continues at a rate that would alarm most municipal storage authorities — I have come to a conclusion:

Style, when it’s done properly, is rarely accidental.

It is a quiet form of wisdom.

There are, of course, no official laws governing good style.

No International Tribunal of Tweed.
No Supreme Court of Corduroy.
No parliamentary committee tasked with regulating waistcoat deployment.

And yet.

After years of close observation, it has become clear that certain principles of good judgement appear again and again among the most interestingly dressed people.

So, I have taken the entirely reasonable step of drafting them into something resembling legislation.

And so in my next musing, I will present to you:

D is never happier than when he’s reading — Aristotle or Zeno, declining the Latin pluperfect, dining with Dickens, or bathing with Lord Byron.

Naturally, he has the appropriate attire: smoking jackets and caps, monogrammed velvet slippers, silk damask dressing gowns draped with studied nonchalance. A gentleman properly equipped for contemplation.

His library is a silent, sacred space. I tend to keep my distance.

But when the laundry room rather inconsiderately seeped through the floor into his sanctuary some weeks ago, I entered armed with buckets, “dog towels,” and a mop. Mercifully, the leak spared the books — just a splash on the Persian.

After restoring order, I lingered.

Great clothing brands are master storytellers. It may be the finest wool they’re weaving, but when it comes to selling, they spin a careful narrative — stitching aspiration into every seam. Glossy campaigns suggest who we might become in their garments, and we willingly step into the story.

Which led me to consider D’s wardrobe — a collection of classic tailoring and luxury menswear, each piece worn sparingly and thoughtfully.

I started to daydream an alternative past for D’s clothes. In another time and place, who might have worn these jackets, coats, and waistcoats? Could their imagined histories inspire new adventures for the next custodian? And so, House of D was born.

I hope you enjoy meeting our fictional fellows. May their tales amuse you, intrigue you, and perhaps persuade you to slip into their style — these pieces are just waiting for a new owner to write their next chapter.
